Fort Nelson 144kV Substation

Power Distribution Substations Protection & Controls

This project consisted of all electrical and erection work required to construct a 144kV double circuit substation for the 55MW TransAlta/BC Hydro gas fired co-generation plant at Mile 284 on the Alaska Highway.

This fast-tracked project was completed in only seven weeks under some of the most challenging winter conditions in North America.

Work consisted of the erection of all station bus and steel work, assembly and testing of three 144 kV manual and two motorized disconnect switches, installation and connection of two Alsthom 144kV circuit breakers, dressing, oiling and commissioning a 70MVA 144x12.5kV power transformer, installation and testing of 3000A 12.5kV generator and transformer cablebus, station ground grid as well as all protection, control equipment and wiring.

Extensive protection, control modifications and control interfacing were also completed to get the station commissioned on time.

A considerable number of winter construction problems were overcome to maintain the project schedule and cooperation among construction management and various contractors on the site made the project a pleasure to work on.
